Supporting girls and women through peer mentoring can create lasting positive change in their lives and communities. If you are compassionate, caring, empathetic, trustworthy, and understanding, you can make a real difference by volunteering your time each week. Our "Girl Glow" Project for young women aged 13 to 25 and the #Women1st Project for women aged 25 and above in Birmingham are actively recruiting peer mentors. This post explains how you can get involved, the impact you can have, and why your support matters.

Why Peer Mentoring Matters
Many girls and women face challenges that affect their confidence, mental health, education, and social connections. Peer mentors provide timely support by sharing experiences, offering guidance, and building trust. This kind of support helps mentees:
Develop stronger self-esteem and resilience
Navigate personal and social challenges
Access resources and opportunities
Build positive relationships and community ties
Peer mentoring creates a safe space where girls and women feel heard and understood. It encourages growth and empowerment through shared experiences rather than formal advice alone.
About the "Girl Glow" and Women1st Projects
Our two projects focus on different age groups but share the goal of supporting women in Birmingham:
Girl Glow Project: Targets young women aged 13 to 25. It focuses on helping girls build confidence, improve life skills, and prepare for future education or careers. Mentors work closely with mentees to provide encouragement and practical advice.
#Women1st Project: Supports women aged 25 and above, including mothers. This project addresses challenges such as balancing family and work, mental health, and personal development. Mentors offer compassionate support and help women access community resources.
Both projects rely on peer mentors who can dedicate some time weekly to build meaningful relationships with mentees.
What It Takes to Be a Peer Mentor
Being a peer mentor requires qualities that foster trust and connection. We look for individuals who are:
Compassionate and caring
Empathetic and understanding
Trustworthy and reliable
Patient and good listeners
Committed to making a positive impact
Training and ongoing support are provided to help you succeed in your role.
How Peer Mentoring Works in Practice
Mentors typically meet with their mentees once a week, either in person or virtually, depending on preferences and circumstances. Meetings may include:
Casual conversations to check in on wellbeing
Goal setting and progress discussions
Sharing experiences and advice
Connecting mentees with local services or opportunities
For example, a mentor might help a young woman prepare for job interviews or support a mother managing childcare and education. The relationship is built on respect and mutual trust, creating a positive environment for growth.
Benefits for Peer Mentors
Volunteering as a peer mentor also offers personal rewards:
Develop communication and leadership skills
Gain insight into different life experiences
Build confidence and empathy
Make a meaningful contribution to your community
Expand your social network
Many mentors find the experience fulfilling and inspiring, often describing it as life-changing.
